ELYRIA, Ohio — In a significant move to assist vulnerable older adults, the Lorain County Commissioners have approved new funding aimed at enhancing in-home medical care and wellness checks for seniors. This decision comes in response to an increasing demand for home-based health services within the community.
During a recent meeting, the commissioners unanimously authorized a $12,600 service agreement between Lorain County Job and Family Services (JFS) and the Lorain County General Health District. This funding will allow nursing staff to conduct home visits to elderly residents, enabling them to monitor health conditions and identify early signs of neglect or mistreatment.
Lorain County is witnessing a consistent rise in the number of older adults. According to data from the Chronicle Telegram, it ranks 10th among Ohio’s 88 counties for growth in its senior citizen population between 2020 and 2024. By July 2024, adults aged 60 and older are projected to represent 28% of Lorain County’s population, surpassing the state average of 25.6%.
The initiative is part of the county’s Adult Protective Services (APS) program, designed to assist residents aged 60 and over who may face physical or cognitive challenges that hinder their ability to care for themselves. APS focuses on preventing unnecessary institutionalization, promoting independence, and addressing circumstances that could jeopardize the safety and well-being of older adults.
Chris Cabot, director of Lorain County JFS, presented the proposal to the commissioners, emphasizing the increasing importance of adult protective services as the senior population continues to grow.
“As we all know, the population is growing,” Cabot remarked during the meeting. He pointed out that advancements in medical care are contributing to longer life expectancies. “This contract is to provide nursing services for our adults in their home — to check vital signs, to treat wounds and to make connections with our adults who don’t obviously have a lot of connections all the time.”
This funding represents a proactive approach to ensuring that vulnerable seniors remain healthy and connected within their communities. The home visits will not only provide vital health assessments but also foster relationships that are crucial for mental and emotional well-being.
The APS program focuses on a variety of services, including:
