USDA Alerts Public to Listeria Risk in HelloFresh Meals

On October 7, 2023, federal health officials issued a warning regarding the possible presence of listeria in certain ready-to-eat meals offered by HelloFresh. This alert concerns two specific meal kits containing recalled frozen spinach. The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the precautionary measures on Monday, highlighting the potential health risks associated with these products.

The affected meals include:

  • HelloFresh Ready Made Meals Cheesy Pulled Pork Pepper Pasta
  • HelloFresh Ready Made Meals Unstuffed Peppers with Ground Turkey

These meal kits were delivered directly to subscribers and are now under scrutiny due to the recalled spinach used in their preparation. Importantly, no adverse effects from this potential contamination have been confirmed as of now.

The alert originates from a notification received by the FSIS from FreshRealm, the parent company of HelloFresh. FreshRealm reported that the spinach in question had tested positive for listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacteria known to cause serious illness in vulnerable populations.

In response to the contamination concerns, Sno Pac Foods, based in Caledonia, Minnesota, has initiated a recall of its frozen spinach products. The recall affects:

  • Del Mar 35 LB Bulk Organic Frozen Spinach
  • 10 Oz Organic Frozen Cut Spinach

The recalled spinach items were distributed across the United States, through both retail outlets and various distributors, according to an announcement from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“A bulk case of spinach from our supplier was tested and found positive for listeria monocytogenes and was of the same code we used to repack the Sno Pac Organic Frozen Cut Spinach into 10 oz packages,” Sno Pac Foods stated in their press release.

In addition to the recall, the production of these spinach products has been halted while the company continues to investigate the origin of the contamination.

Listeria infection presents serious health risks, particularly for at-risk groups. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that pregnant women, newborns, adults over 65, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly susceptible to severe illness from listeria monocytogenes.

Each year, the CDC estimates that listeria infections result in approximately 172 deaths in the United States, underscoring the seriousness of the matter. Symptoms associated with listeria infection can include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues, which may become more severe in high-risk individuals.

Consumers who have purchased the specific HelloFresh meal kits or the recalled spinach products should take necessary precautions. It is advisable to check for any symptoms related to listeria infection and to dispose of any affected products immediately.

As this recall unfolds, health authorities emphasize the importance of maintaining food safety measures and being vigilant for potential symptoms of foodborne illnesses. Public awareness is crucial to preventing the spread of listeria and ensuring community health. HelloFresh and its parent company, FreshRealm, are taking steps to address this issue and keep their customers informed during this ongoing investigation.

In the meantime, those who suspect they might have consumed the affected meal kits or frozen spinach should contact healthcare providers for guidance. As federal health officials continue monitoring the situation, further updates may be provided as more information becomes available.
