Simple ways to maintain eye health

Having good eyesight is important. According to the Vision Council of America, 75 percent of American adults use some form of vision correction. The figure includes people who wear eyeglasses and contacts. There are several ways individuals can maintain their eye health as they grow older.

A person’s diet can greatly affect their eye health. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E prevent eye health from deteriorating. The same nutrients can stop cataracts and macular degeneration. A good diet isn’t just for your waistline but for your eyes too. Individuals should load up on green vegetables, salmon, tuna, eggs, oranges, pork and other foods rich in eye health maintaining nutrients.

Sunlight can cause macular degeneration and cataracts to form. Wearing sunglasses can prevent these two eyesight zapping conditions from occurring. It doesn’t even have to be sunny outside to need sunglasses. The glare of the sun on a cloudy day can still affect a person’s eye health.

Computer and Smartphone screens

Millions of people stare at computer screens all day at work. The bright screens affect the eyes and can damage a person’s sight. Computer screens cause eyestrain to occur from looking at them for too long. They can also cause blurred vision and individuals may find focusing on distant objects difficult. Trouble focusing could affect a person’s ability to drive an automobile. Computer screens aren’t the only devices to hurt eyesight. Smartphone screens play a part in the deterioration of eyesight too. Doctors recommend taking a 20-minute break to rest the eyes when working at a computer.

According to, sleep plays a key role in maintaining eye health. Sleep allows the eyes to rest and repair themselves from the day. Sleeping for fewer than eight hours can cause a person’s eyes to be strained and vision to weaken. To maintain eyesight and eye health, individuals should try to get at least eight hours of sleep each night.

These steps can help individuals maintain their eyesight, but it is advised to regularly see an eye doctor for checkups too.
